  • Acer Africa and Tech Girl’s Sam Wright hosted #AcerForGaming, an all-girl gaming event at The Nexus in Johannesburg aimed at involving girls and women to gaming and Esports.

The event included video games, food, and special guests such as South African gamer Pippa Tshabalala, professional Esports star Shazz, and local gaming personalities Chani_ZA, Constantine104, Zoe Hawkins and Jules ‘Bish’ Robson

“This is an opportunity to celebrate females in the South African gaming space with a range of games for every level,” said Wright.

“The truth is, even if you suck, playing video games is fun, and we want more people to watch Esports and see how incredibly entertaining it can be as a past time.”

Wright added that while many girls may be interetsted in gaming, they might be embarrassed to try new games or to play in front of male gamers because of the stereotypes that affect women who play.

“Yet contrary to popular belief, 44% of gamers worldwide are female, and gaming has proven to assist with proactive problem solving in the workplace,” said Acer Africa.

“Our partnership demonstrates our commitment to the development of women in gaming as this exclusive girl gaming night showcases the potential of female gaming in South Africa.” Acer

provided some of the devices, Xbox offered consoles for everyone to play on, and other sponsors included Converse, Urban Decay, GHD, and Red Bull.
